Eco Paper Options Explained in Easy Terms

Environmental responsibility starts with an understanding of how different initiatives and alternatives effect the environment. Today’s sustainable specialty papers (eco-papers) are every bit as stunning and as graphically unique as any specialty papers on the market. Better yet, green papers are just as cost effective as their more resource-intensive counterparts.

So whether you are a casual paper consumer or a graphics professional looking to benefit from green design, you'll find far more sustainable paper alternatives to choose from than ever before, with easy-to-understand descriptions, making it easy to make the right choice, not only as to the paper itself, but also in ways you choose to support the environment. In fact, we offer seven sustainable paper alternatives to choose from.

FSC logo

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified Paper

Most paper contains wood fiber. Where that wood fiber comes from and how it’s harvested matters. A lot. Illegal logging, clear-cutting, deforestation, unsafe work environments and irresponsible social practices can be rampant in unregulated and non-FSC certified forests around the world.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) logo ensures that the fiber used to manufacture our paper and envelopes are designated as FSC certified and came from well-managed forests where people, wildlife and the environment benefit from the forestry practices. Profitable and well-managed forests keep the forests healthy and discourage development.

FSC certification is globally recognized as being the most credible and strongest system for ensuring well-managed forests. When you purchase FSC certified papers from us, you are entitled to use the FSC logo on your projects, within FSC logo usage guidelines, to show the world you are making environmentally sensitive choices. Learn more about FSC paper.

SFI: Sustainable Forestry Initiative

Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Certified Paper

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program is based on the premise that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist. SFI program participants practice sustainable forestry on all the lands they manage. They also influence millions of additional acres through the training of loggers and foresters in best management practices and landowner outreach programs. SFI certified papers address the uniquely North American forest issues. Notable in the SFI standard is its limit on 40 acre cuts of boreal forests. Being the only solely North American standard for forest certification, SFI is an increasingly important certification.

The SFI label helps consumers identify and give preference to products from well-managed forests and makes sustainable forestry less anonymous. When you purchase SFI certified papers from us, you are entitled to use the SFI logo on your projects, within SFI label guidelines, to show the world you are making environmentally sensitive choices.

Recycled Paper logo

Recycled Paper

Recycled paper reduces logging and benefits forestry management as well as reduces energy consumption, water usage and landfill space. Recycled paper is available in various percentages of recycled content from 10% to 100%. Obviously the more recycled content, the fewer resources are required. Regardless of the level of recycled content, you can find stunning recycled papers to meet your needs — recycled or green paper no longer looks recycled.

When you purchase recycled paper from us you are entitled to use recycled paper logos on your projects, within stated guidelines, to show the world you are making environmentally sensitive choices. Learn more about recycled paper.

Renewable Energy Paper

Renewable Energy Paper (made from renewable energy sources)

Use of wind power and other renewable energy sources creates less air pollution, reduces overall greenhouse gas emissions and benefits our society and environment. The Paper Mill Store uses 100% wind power for our electricity needs and is pleased to offer our customers paper and envelopes that are made using renewable energy sources such as wind power.

By supporting these products, you are supporting sustainable policies and aiding the growth of renewable energy usage as well. When you purchase paper made with renewable energy from us, you are entitled to make this claim as well as print our renewable energy logo on your projects to show the world you are making environmentally sensitive choices. Learn more about the paper mills who produce outstanding paper using wind power and other renewable energy sources.

Carbon Neutral Paper

Carbon Neutral Paper

Carbon neutral paper is achieved when the paper mill takes actions to neutralize the carbon effect of making a specific paper. Zeroing out carbon gas emissions of the manufacturing process helps to reduce greenhouse gasses, which are linked to global climate change. Paper companies can create carbon neutral papers by purchasing carbon credits to support carbon gas reduction projects or by participating in carbon gas reduction projects, sometimes within their own manufacturing process and sometimes through outside projects. Learn more about carbon neutral papers.

Tree-free Paper

Tree-free Paper

Some paper uses alternative sources of fiber, the most common being the cotton fiber found in fine stationery and other premium grade papers. In this sense, purchasing cotton paper — and any non-wood fiber paper — helps save trees and better manage forests. In addition to cotton paper, we also have an artist paper made with esparto grass, a fiber which gives the paper a truly unique surface texture and artistic quality. Learn more about our selection of tree-free papers.

Chlorine-free Paper

Chlorine-free Paper

White paper is partially brightened by bleaching. Traditionally, chlorine had been the primary bleaching agent, but there are now many white paper products made with chlorine-free and environmentally friendly bleaching processes. See our collection of chlorine-free paper.

As founder of The Paper Mill Store, I believe that environmental responsibility is a multifaceted effort, and as a company, we are doing our best to make sustainable, smart choices. We use 100% wind power to meet the electricity needs of our company; we offset 100% of the carbon produced by our outbound shipping; we offer FSC papers, SFI papers and recycled papers and we are FSC & SFI Chain of Custody certified.

In addition, we actively seek ways to reduce our energy usage and utilize more and higher percentage recycled materials in our packaging. We also encourage our suppliers to offer more recycled paper and to employ more energy saving processes, while continuing to provide you, our customer, with the best paper choices possible.

As a long-time paper company executive, I take environmental and sustainability issues seriously, and I am personally very proud of our industry’s (and our) voluntary efforts to make more environmentally responsible choices and to make real substantiated changes in our collective business practices. I hope you find the information on sustainable paper helpful, and I wish you the very best in pursuing your own environmental goals.
