Paper Making - A Brief History Paper Manufacturing has a long history dating back to 3000 BC in Egypt. Paper was first manufactured using papyrus. Because sub tropical environments are required to grow papyrus, northern cultures used animal skins to create the world's first parchment. Various fibers and materials were used to make papers depending on availability and other limitations. European commercial handmade papers using a variety of vegetable fibers appeared in the 1600's as the art of paper making spread around the globe. As the demand for paper grew with the introduction of printing technologies, paper mills sprang up through Europe. At one point in time the south western region of Holland boasted more than 1,000 paper mills in operation. Today only one of these historic mills, De Middelste Molen (the middle mill) still stands as a historic reminder of the early days of modern paper making gone past.
