Dear Mr. or Ms,
"I am excited to learn of your open position at XYZ. I've heard great things about your company and I think I might be able to help you to continue your success." "Attached is my resume for the position of XX that I saw in XX publication." (or if you were referred by a company friend or insider it's best to point this out - "...for which Peter Donahue suggested I apply.")
"I hope to find a convenient time for you meet with me so that I can introduce myself in person and so that we can discuss how I can add value to XYZ through my people skills, (attention to detail, my long experience with X positions and projects.)" (Use whatever best fits here for answering the question of how you would be beneficial to the company. Be brief. Use only one or two short paragraphs to make your case and to pique their interest in you. This cover letter is an introduction to your resume. Don't give your whole history here.) "With a positive review from your team I would be available to begin working for you on X date."
(Make an action point here.) As an example, "I will call you at 2:15 PM on Thursday December 18th. to see if we can schedule an interview" or if more appropriate "Please contact me at 555-555-1212 or at my home address listed above." Be positive, " I am looking forward to meeting you. Thank you for considering me for this poison.
Sincerely,
(your handwritten signature here)

(Using a post script can be helpful but should be used sparingly and only when you feel confident of the personalized positive message you're sending with it.)
P.S. I was excited to see your display in the local X store. The presentation was effective, in fact my nephew bought two of your X products." |
