Neenah’s Esse® Papers are easy to print on when following these simple hints. It is recommended to pre-test all printing procedures prior to press time to ensure the desired results are achieved.
Print Neenah’s Esse Smooth and Textured surfaces like any conventional uncoated paper. The textured surface will absorb more ink than smooth paper, and additional packing of the offset blanket and additional pressure may be needed to press the ink into the textured surface. For Esse Pearlized finish, fully oxidizing inks are necessary. We recommend heat resistant, wax free ink if you plan to follow lithography with xerographic or laser printing technologies.
Keep Neenah’s Esse products wrapped until the moment of printing. It is essential to let the paper acclimate, for a minimum of 24 hours – longer during cold weather – in the press room while still wrapped in mill packaging. Keep Neenah’s Esse products covered during drying, between passes and prior to any finishing work. Pressroom conditions should be as close as possible to 68 degrees, and 45-60% relative humidity.
Varnish is optional as a surface protector. Aqueous coating can be used on Pearlized paper.
FOLDING AND SCORING:
To properly score and fold Neenah’s Esse, use a rounded channel score with a 3 point rule and matching channel matrix a minimum width of 2 ½ times the caliper of the paper. Score with the grain, using a light letterpress score for maximum control. On large projects with less stringent quality requirements on press litho-scoring may be acceptable. Fold into the bead of the score. The heavy texture on cover weight Esse is prone to cracking at folds. Minimize problems by printing on the non-textured side in the area of a fold. Printing over the texture highlights cracking at the fold. You may also opt to fold with the non-textured side out.
Neenah’s Esse is suitable for all standard binding processes. It is important to plan for proper grain direction in all binding applications. Grain direction should run parallel to the spine for optimum results.
LASER AND INKJET GUARANTEED:
on smooth and texture 24 lb writing weight. Digital printing approved for all weights except double thick cover for Painting and Furniture collections.
