FIDELITY Onion Skin

FIDELITY Onion Skin is easy to print on when following these simple hints. It is recommended to pretest all printing procedures prior to press time to ensure the desired results are achieved.

OFFSET INKS:

Print Onion Skin like any conventional uncoated paper. Due to the very low basis weight, pretest to make sure your particular offset printing press will handle the paper.

HANDLING:

Keep Onion Skin products wrapped until the moment of printing. It is essential to let the paper acclimate, for a minimum of 24 hours – longer during cold weather – in the press room while still wrapped in mill packaging. Keep Onion Skin products covered during drying, between passes and prior to any finishing work. Pressroom conditions should be as close as possible to 68 degrees, and 45-60% relative humidity.

VARNISH:

Varnish is optional as a surface protector.

FOLDING AND SCORING:

To properly score and fold Onion Skin, use a rounded channel score with a 1 or 2 point rule and a 0.030” or 0.040” channel matrix. Score with the grain, using a light letterpress score for maximum control. On large projects with less stringent quality requirements on-press litho-scoring may be acceptable. Fold into the bead of the score. On some projects there will be no need to score this paper at all, as it is very flexible and light.

BINDING:

Onion Skin is suitable for all standard binding processes. It is important to plan for proper grain direction in all binding applications. Grain direction should run parallel to the spine for optimum results.

LASER AND INKJET:

Please pretest on your equipment as this very light paper may not work with some devices.

yes I received the paper. Because of the thin weight of the paper I would recommend putting cardboard on both sides of the ream to prevent creasing.

Perfect.

Perfectly thin. I am using this to create miniatures flowers, and it is the thinnest paper I could find. It holds acrylic paint well. Also remains pliable, yet also goes through a punch with no frayed edges. Love that I could get sample before buying a whole ream.

Pretty much what I used 50 years ago

I would have selected "great find" in the description box had it been offered. These are 8.5 x 11" sheets of the gossamer air mail pages I wrote on in the 60s. Lived overseas, so wrote and received many letters on this paper. I've even saved some of them. 50 years later, this onion skin has gotten better over time.

It's like if tissue paper were actually useful

Surprisingly strong and remarkably useful. It wrinkles like crazy when wet but that's to be expected for something so thin. The consistency is really good and the paper is pleasant to write on even with sharp steel calligraphy nibs. No tearing, no bleeding with water based inks.

Superb quality -- best onion skin paper available!

I'm on my fourth ream of this versatile paper and recommend it for just about any application including crafts, greeting card liners, tracing and writing. It has a silky-smooth finish and plays well with a wide variety or inks. I've even run it through my inkjet printer a few times with good results (about the same amount of ink spread as you'd expect from regular non-inkjet paper). The quality is simply superb.

Wonderful find

This is the quality of onion skin paper I haven't seen for 15 years--only tracing paper in art stores in the 9 x 12" size, which is mostly unusable for letter writing with global surface mail. This paper can hold ink from a fountain pen with no bleed through. It has a surface that is a pleasure with that same fountain pen. I can put 5 sheets in a business envelope and still be under one ounce. Get some before no one on earth makes it.

Patient Product Search a Total Success!

I have been searching for onion skin paper for some time. Unfortunately, when located paper, it was usually too high priced. I even tried thrift or resale shops but paper was very yellowed with low inventory. I was so happy my persistent search took me to The PAPERMILL Store! Quality was terrific, price was great, and plenty of inventory. Total success!

Great products with an affordable prices too!

Our church wanted me to print a couple of Bible Books and that's why I ordered these papers because I thought it was the Bible Papers, but when It arrived, I've tried to print on a couple of pages and it is not the Bible Papers so when I printed, it shows the other side and its hard to read that's why I have to return them. But I really like them, if only I have something that I would only print on one side, then I will definitely keep them. They are great products!

Onion-Skin Paper, 500 Sheets.

For sure, I love the product, it's what I thought it would be. But I did not like the terms of delivery. First, instead of giving an option, such as mail delivery, they stick you into UPS, which is like 23 dollars, and since I'm in Canada, add a few more bucks to that. Then when it gets to the border, they tell you that you MUST get another UPS deliverer here, which is another 23 dollars...and so, that equals, not a satisfied customer. I'll look for Onion-Skin paper in my local area, and save myself the tears....lol.

Yes

The service is excellent from Paper Mill also the paper is very good if a uniform thickness is not required. For my specialty use in thickness is important. This might not sound much to a lot of people and it is not a problem for ordinary applications but the paper varies in thickness through out a single sheet from .0017" to .0021" thickness. But the quality of the product is good.

Use for paper foundation piecing.

This paper is perfect for foundation paper quilt piecing. It folds easily and tears out easily if you use a very small stitch length - 1.8 or smaller. I have almost used my first ream and ready to reorder. It is a little finicky in the printer but the advantage of easy tear out more than makes up for this.

This is a beautiful paper that takes ink well. It is a pleasure to write on it with a fountain pen. Onion skin paper is great for correspondence and letter-writing since it adds little weight which is useful for keeping postage costs under control. The typewriting paper I hoped it would be !

I was searching for that thin typewriting paper I remembered from my High School typing class, the one you see in old movies where the police are shuffling through documents. I live in NYC and thought for sure a stationery store, typewriter repair store, or high-end office supply would stock this 9 lb. paper. WRONG ! The closest I found were blue airmail paper that were only sold in kits with envelopes for a lot of $$$ per page. Delighted to find it here.

The paper works like a dream, writing on it with a typewriter or pen. I've been tearing it in half and sending out delicate letters.

Lovely paper

I use the product for making my own Midori Traveler's Notebooks inserts as well as paper for writing to friends.

There is bleed-through, but it doesn't stain the papers that follow. Obviously because the paper is fairly sheer that you cannot write on the backside once you've written on the front.

If you love noisy and crinkle-y paper, this stuff is for you. I love the feel and texture. My fountain pen nib glides over the surface and does not catch on anything.

I love this paper and will be getting another ream very shortly.

I use the onion skin paper to make inserts for my Midori Traveler's Notebook. It takes fountain pen ink very well. Of course the paper is see through, but there's usually no bleed through. You can right on the other side if you want, but I choose not to. I love the crinkly sound the paper makes.

Crinkle!

I ordered this after receiving several pen pal letters with this paper. It has intrigued me for months now and I finally made the purchase. After researching prices online, this was the best value, with the $5 coupon for new customers. Shipping was more expensive than I expensive but overall, it still ended up being cheaper than any other onion skin paper online. This ream will last me a year or more, I think! I use fountain pens for correspondence and the inks are more saturated so see-through is an issue, which is why I can only use one side per page. The "crinkling" sound of this paper is part of the unique writing experience and novelty. This paper will be great for international letters, where weight is an issue. Overall, I really like onion skin paper and will finding ways to use this in my letter writing!

Exactly what I wanted

I bought this paper a couple years ago, thinking I'd use it for tracing paper; this is probably the best tracing paper I've ever used. Now I'm getting into quilting, and something I wanted to try was paper piecing. This paper works very well - it's translucent, tears away easily and well... in short, it's everything I could have wanted, and at a much lower price than what's sold in quilt shops. I wish I could get it in a bigger size, but for most applications, US Letter is fine.

Onionskin Paper

This isn't exactly what I was hoping for...real onionskin as in "the old days" as recently as the 1980's or even later. It is a close approximation. It's very lightweight and has a good hand, but it's smooth. Real Onionskin is textured, wrinkly, and maybe even thinner. But since you had to go to Europe (of course) to get this paper from Germany, I'm as happy as I can be with it.

If you start to make it here again, I am very sure that artists, writers, fountain pen advocates, and lots of folks will be very happy. Think about it!

Unusual Fine Quality

This is a beautiful paper. I was a bit skeptical because I have always used 100% cotton. This is not a substiture or an imitation of 100% cotton. It is something entirely different. The texture changes with the light. The paper feels crisp and strong. It is truly translucent but not actually transparent. It is an unusual and unique paper and I will buy more. I really like it. It is the paper I always wanted but could never find. Graphite and colored pencils blend well and only the heaviest dripping markers bleed through.

This stuff is great!

My parents used this paper. My dad was overseas and I grew up with it. I got tired the 16 mile round-trip to the post office to check if my letters are overweight, quite often they are. Not only am I'm paying extra postage and wasting over an hour of time, there is the price of gas to consider. I have close friends in Europe and the USA not on line -- we write and this stuff is great for long letters. I also mail manuscripts and large documents sometimes, onion skin saves money and space. What used to fit into a box now goes easily into an envelope. The problem is that it is difficult to find and very overpriced.

Perfect for Paper Patching bullets.

Using a wraparound patching method (as described by Paul Matthews) this paper will give a 0.450" pill an final OD of 0.458" and a 0.459" pill a final OD of 0.468" (for the Martini Henry).

Fantastic stuff. I would buy another ream of it if one ream weren't enough to last me several lifetimes. :)

Great Find

I found this paper reviewed on a popular pen forum and decided to take a chance. I had found a few months ago a great bagasse paper that has similar properties to this pape, most likely because they both lack the wood (tree) fibers. With the bagasse's low availability and poor quality control I was looking for a replacement and I am happy to have found it in this paper. I was surprised to find that with the 10 or so inks used on this paper none of them feathered, though it also doesn't allow for great ink shading. You can actually pour ink on it and it will NOT soak through, it just puddles. I think the paper weight is also a plus (especially for foreign correspondence). For me it is a unique experience to write on something that is so thin but incredibly strong, and the paper crinkling is a nice bonus too, very vintage. Though it seems people have had problems with printer jams, I think it is the fault of the paper weight and NOT the paper. The jams I get from wood pulp paper leave shredded, ripped, and mutilated pieces for me to discover. Not so with this durable paper it wrinkles but doesn't rip. The paper color is nice subtle ivory color. It is translucent like tracing paper (one can use a guide sheet underneath). However, it is more opaque so when there is another written sheet beneath it (especially if not pressed firmly flat upon it) the writing is still highly legible. The paper does have a cockle finish, but it is subtle. The only real drawback for me with this paper is the texture. Though the paper is by no means rough, it is also not super smooth, and it is consistent throughout. I like to write with a fine or extra fine nib, so the rougher texture of this paper gives a "scratchier" sound than the smoother papers I am used to. Be that as it, one would think that with the scratching the cotton fibers would clog my fountain pen, but this is not the case. I have written countless pages with no problems. All in all I will be buying more of this paper and would welcome anyone else to try it.

Highly versatile

onion skin paper was a popular school arts and crafts item when i was growing up. like many other physical items, its uses have been diminished by the computer, where "cut and paste" has taken on very common and precise usage.

Still, for kids and adults with imagination, onion skin paper is a very versatile, creative, and flexible tool across many varied arts projects.

Great Paper

This product is wonderful - it doesn't have the bumpy look of true onion skin, but it's great for writing letters.

I write a lot of long letters and the lightness of the paper keeps the postage cost down.

I only had a bit of feathering with a very wet writing Fountain pen, all the other fountain pens worked fine, however.

What an amazing find!

I have been searching for onionskin paper for decades. The major mills have long since stopped making this paper, and as a major user of fountain pens for personal correspondence, this paper has filled that need for me. It is strong and smooth for pen nibs and it's basic color works with all ink colors. I would love to see pastel paper and texture options (pebbling).

Very nice paper, hard to print on

I'm quite happy I ordered a ream of the all cotton "onion skin" paper. Its really fun paper to play with.

I ordered the paper so I could print a large number of pages but still fit them in a skinny portfolio.

The printing process was quite painful. Most laser printers would only print a page or two before jamming (the jams where often cause because the paper is so thin that either multiple sheets got pulled in together and one of them went off track or only some of the feed rollers grabbed the paper, causing it to twist and to crumple)

Amazingly, even though it often jammed the paper never ripped, it would always pull out of the printer whole (... covered with uncooked toner).

I had the best luck with a tiny home laser printer (the hp laserjet 1100) it has an almost straight down feed, and I could often get 20 or so pages through before I had a jam.

The pain, however, had a payoff. The pages I did get through were beautiful, it really is amazing paper. I mounted 36 printed pages 2 hole paper wallet (a "goldfold"), and everyone I showed it to was just amazed by the paper (both visually and tactilely - slightly clear, makes a "crinkling" sound when handled, slightly sticky to the touch)

All in all its good stuff.

Finally! Onionskin Again.

I use this for Airmail paper, because American stores no longer carry any. Onionskin paper works quite well for this purpose, although because of it's transparency only one side can be used.

The quality of this paper is excellent. Made of 100 percent cotton, its strength is surprising for its weight and it takes ink very well without feathering.

Your only real choice

This is a very fine and uniform grade of onion skin paper. It is not "rippled" like most old onion skin papers. The 9 lb. weight jams in the two HP printers I tried it with: 2420d and a 2600n. Otherwise, it's great for "old-fashioned" carbon copying using an "impact" typewriter, for photo page overlays in custom made photography books and for any craft project that needs a very lightweight, translucent paper.

I'm an artist that likes to use obsolete items. This paper is beautiful, it's got a wonderful tactile quality and makes a nice crinkly sound when handled. This is a lightweight paper, once used for sending airmail. It's 25% cotton and stores well; I have documents typed on this medium from over thirty years ago. It's pricey but beautiful. If you own a typewriter, you this!

I looked for a while to find a good paper to use in my typewriter. I kept coming back here and after a couple weeks, finally made the purchase.

It was less expensive than similar papers in craft and specialties stores. I've been happily using the paper every day and while at first I thought it was a little flimsy, after typing the ink looks really good on the paper.

I'm thinking about buying a couple more reams to make sure I don't run out!

Works great for pens and typewriters

No, it's not cockle-finished like the classic onion skin papers of old, but it does have a very usable surface, with good "pseudo"-cockling. I bought it for my typewriter and it works fine for typing, but I was surprised how well it works when using good quality inks, like J. Herbin's Perle Noire. The Paper Mill Store shipped fast, too. Highly recommended.

Fabulous for all kinds of pens and inks!

I collect and use fountain pens, both modern and "vintage," exclusively for writing letters. Yes, I'm one of those strange people who actually hand-write letters to my friends; and I have pen-pals all over the world, from the U.S. to England, Israel, Australia, and the Philippines. In addition to fountain pens, I also collect different inks in a rainbow of colors. I do NOT use ballpoints or rollerballs.

Most modern papers, especially those made from recycled material, are unfortunately horrible for fountain pens and inks. The ink feathers, spreads, and bleeds through; and the papers themself shed fibers that get stuck in the tines of the pen's nib.

I wasn't sure how this paper would act with fountain pens and ink, so I ordered a sample pack first. I was absolutely blown away! This paper is about as perfect as paper can get! It's lightweight for those overseas letters, and it has happily taken all varieties of inks from many different makes of pens with absolutely no bleed-through and no feathering. It is pure joy to use! I was so happy with my samples, I ordered a ream.

Onion skin paper is scarcer than hens' teeth, so I was both flabbergasted and delighted to find a place that still sells it; and I was even more delighted to discover that it's absolutely WONDERFUL to use with my fountain pens. I've been recommending this paper to my pen pals, all of whom have been impressed with its beautiful finish and the way it takes ink. (We like very white paper because it shows off the colors of our inks, and this paper shows them exquisitely!)

Please don't ever stop carrying this paper!
