Printing Hints
Appleton Fluorescents
Appleton Fluorescents Papers are easy to print on when following these simple hints. It is recommended to pretest all printing procedures prior to press time to ensure the best possible results.
OFFSET INKS:
Print Fluorescents with fast drying inks to prevent setoff. If no show-through of fluorescent color is desired, opaque ink must be used. For exceptional color depth, use two hits of opaque white ink as a base. We recommend heat resistant, wax free ink if you plan to follow lithography with xerographic or laser printing technologies.
HANDLING:
Keep Fluorescents products wrapped until the moment of printing. It is essential to let the paper acclimatize, for a minimum of 24 hours – longer during cold weather – in the press room while still wrapped in mill packaging. Keep Fluorescents products covered during drying, between passes and prior to any finishing work. Pressroom conditions should be as close as possible to 70 degrees, and 40-50% relative humidity. Cut and trim C1S paper with the fluorescent side down.
REVERSE:
C1S has a barrier coat on the white side. Print quality should be verified by testing.
VARNISH:
Varnish or aqueous coating is optional as a surface protector or to achieve varnish effects. It is recommended that all varnishes or coatings are pre-tested to determine compatibility.
FOLDING AND SCORING:
Always fold, score and bind with the grain direction. Start with a 2 point rounded channel score to prevent cracking. The matrix channel should be a minimum width of 2.5 times the caliper of the sheet to be scored, plus 0.028”. Do not use sharp tools when folding and scoring.
BINDING:
Fluorescents are generally suitable for all standard binding processes. It is important to plan for proper grain direction in all binding applications. Grain direction should run parallel to the spine for optimum results.
OTHER PRINTING METHODS:
Fluorescents can be used with various printing applications such as: photocopier, laser, ink jet, offset and silkscreen. Stamp applied inks and markers can be used without smudging. Fluorescents are resistant to small amounts of water.
FOIL STAMPING:
It is recommended to pretest foils to find the best release, time and temperature for the size of the foil stamp and color of foil for each specific job.
LASER AND INK JET COMPATIBLE:
on all items, subject to printer restrictions.
