Printing Hints
UV Ultra® II
UV Ultra® II Translucent Printing Papers are easy to print on when following these simple hints. It is recommended to pretest all printing procedures prior to press time to ensure the desired results are achieved.
INKS:
Use low solvent (0-5% VOC), oil-based inks for conventional offset printing. Ink with higher than recommended solvent content may cause ink set difficulties. Inks should be formulated to dry purely through oxidation. In-plant ink formulation is not recommended. UV inks have printed successfully on UV Ultra II and eliminate drying time. Ask your ink manufacturer about UV Ultra II products specifically. Pre-test any unfamiliar procedures and ensure that proper ink formulations are utilized.
HANDLING:
Keep UV Ultra II products wrapped until the moment of printing. It is essential to let the paper acclimate, for a minimum of 24 hours – longer during cold weather – in the press room while still wrapped in mill packaging. Keep UV Ultra II products covered during drying, between passes and prior to any finishing work. Pressroom conditions should be as close as possible to 68 degrees and 45-60% relative humidity. Should you experience a curl problem, it is most likely temperature – or humidity – related. Print in small lifts. Frequent airing of lifts is also recommended.
FOUNTAIN SOLUTION:
The ink-water balance should be run at an ABSOLUTE MINIMUM to allow ink to dry. Given the non-porous property of UV Ultra II products, excess water will NOT be absorbed or removed from the blanket. Any excess water will slow drying. Solid or multiple color bars can be used to assist in removing water and aid in set time.
OFFSET SPRAY:
If the job requires offset spray, use coated spray of normal fineness.
VARNISH:
Pre-test UV Ultra II products for compatibility. Do not use aqueous coatings. Apply 100% VOC free varnish after the underlying ink is dry. A clear over-print varnish can be used to seal the sheet when UV Ultra II is used as a cover, wrap, free-hanging application, or when very heavy ink coverage is applied to one side of the paper. Consult your varnish supplier and pre-test.
CUTTING:
Do not use a newly sharpened blade when cutting UV Ultra II products. A newly sharpened blade may chip. A slightly dull but clean-edged blade with a 23°-bevel angle is ideal.
FOLDING AND SCORING:
Always fold, score and bind with the grain direction. Start with a 2 point rounded channel score. The matrix channel should start at 2.5 times the caliper of the sheet, plus 0.028", usually 0.040" or 0.050". Do not use sharp tools when folding and scoring. Always pre-test any procedures prior to production.
FOIL STAMPING:
Select foils designed for non-absorbent surfaces. Pretest to find the best foil release, temperature, pressure and dwell time. Small area foils generally perform better.
EMBOSSING:
An opaque white area will appear when embossing. We recommend pretesting to be sure this effect is acceptable.
BINDING:
Perfect binding and spiral binding work well with UV Ultra II. Always bind parallel to the grain. Pretest glue when perfect binding. Saddling stitching should be pretested, and is not recommended for use with UV Ultra II as the outside cover or in centerfold applications. Fold strength varies with basis weight, and therefore the end use and product life expectancy should be considered in binding design.
